Japan is an amazing place that wedges itself into every corner of the mind after one visit. The experience of being there is so lasting that the moment you leave, all you can think about is returning. Lately, I have found myself being pulled back with near unbearable force.
Hanging out at home all day and surfing the internet makes it very easy to run across Japan related videos and articles; funny products, and weird pictures. But the Japan in my mind is much less about the silly novelty things that America seems to like so much. My Japan is more about the sounds of scooter engines revving and echoing down empty morning streets. Its about long peaceful train rides and drinking canned coffee alone in a park. Less about the silly game shows and wacky toys (which are amazing); but more about finding small noodle shops and boutiques well off the beaten path and far away from the Yamanote line(Google it).
My Japan is layered and texturized. This video by Matthew Brown really captures the country in a way that does it justice. It doesn’t focus on the stereotypically entertaining points of Japanese culture. It shows vibrant countryside and and beautiful interactions. This is how I remember Japan.
